Paper, Nature, and Science

Receiving the limitation of using only paper, glue, and tape for this project in unison with the broad thematic umbrella of abnormalities found in science and n

ature, my mind was polarized to the two topics rather than seeking a way to melt fascinations of nature with scientific concepts. At some point during the first few days of ideations for what my paper sculpture could be, an old friend of mine introduced me to the fourth and a half chakra, otherwise known as the alta major chakra. The Alta Major Chakra is located in the middle of one’s neck and is said to be the vortex to a person’s deepest spiritual energies. My friend continued to explain how a person can interpret a lot about another person by feeling the back of their neck. From this new seed of information, I began to experiment with the middle ground of nature and science. Each panel of my sculpture is designed after a cross cut of a lily - a flower that represents purity of self, personal development, and growth.

Stepping away from the symbolism and evaluating the technicalities of this project, I was astounded by the preparation and adjustments I needed to make throughout this project. Maintaining an identical pattern through each of the eight panels was a meticulous task that I did not prepare myself for. I was walking on thin ice the duration of my project. Knowing that all components to each panel needed to be made to maintain unity, I was not able to begin assembly until the final leg of my project. I was able to resolve the structural issues I eventually confronted, but I believe that making even a maquette of a single panel would have prevented several crises from occurring. Even during my final assembly, I was unsure if my sculpture would withhold the weight and minimal support I designed it to have. This project forced me to tackle issues as they arose, and be okay with the uncertainty. I am proud of the final product, and feel that it is a representation of my life through spirituality and symbolism.
